600 Visitor Visa

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) allows people to visit Australia for tourism, to visit family and friends, or for short-term business activities. It is the main visa for visitors coming from countries that are not part of the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor programs. The visa can be granted for up to 12 months at a time, with stays of up to 3 months per visit depending on the stream and assessment.

There are several streams under the Visitor visa:

Key requirements: genuine visitor intent; ability to support yourself financially during the visit; ties to your home country; no significant health or character concerns. Multiple-entry may be granted, allowing multiple visits within the visa validity.

ART — Administrative Review Tribunal

The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) is Australia's independent tribunal for merits review of administrative decisions. It replaced the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) on 14 October 2024 following the passage of the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024. In the immigration context, the ART reviews visa refusals, visa cancellations, and character decisions made by the Department of Home Affairs.

When to apply: You can apply for ART review if your visa application was refused or cancelled, and you received a notice from the Department of Home Affairs advising you of your review rights. You generally have 21 days from the date of the decision letter to lodge your application for review.

Application fee: The current application fee is AUD 3,580. If you are successful in your review, 50% of the fee (AUD 1,790) will be refunded. You may apply for a fee reduction if you hold a health care card or pension concession card.

What the ART considers: The ART conducts a merits review, meaning it looks at the case afresh — considering all the facts, documents, and law — and can affirm, vary, or set aside the original decision. It can also substitute a new decision.

Process: After lodging the application, the Department provides a Statement of Decision and Reasons. You will have the opportunity to submit additional evidence and attend a hearing. The ART aims to resolve most immigration cases within 12–18 months, though complex cases may take longer.
