482 Skills in Demand Visa
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on 7 December 2024. It allows approved Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill positions they cannot fill locally. The visa is valid for up to 4 years and provides a direct pathway to permanent residence through the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme. There are three streams:
- Core Skills stream — for workers in occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List with an annual salary of AUD 76,515–141,210. Requires at least 1 year of relevant full-time work experience in the past 5 years.
- Specialist Skills stream — for highly skilled workers earning above AUD 141,210 per year. No occupation list applies. Processing target of 7 days.
- Labour Agreement stream — for workers nominated by employers who have negotiated a Labour Agreement with the Australian Government.
This visa lets you live and work in Australia temporarily, bring eligible family members, and travel in and out of Australia.
494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa
The Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) is a 5-year provisional visa for skilled workers sponsored by an approved employer in a designated regional area of Australia. It provides a pathway to permanent residence through the subclass 191 visa. Key requirements:
- Employer must be located in and operating from a designated regional area
- Occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list
- Valid skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
- At least 3 years of relevant full-time work experience
- Competent English
- Under 45 years of age
You must live and work only in a designated regional area while holding this visa. After 3 years of living and working in the region with taxable income above AUD 70,000 per year, you may apply for the subclass 191 permanent visa.
186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa
The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers nominated by an approved Australian employer. The minimum salary is AUD 76,515 per year (nominations lodged before 30 June 2026). There are two streams:
- Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream — for holders of a subclass 482 (or legacy 457) visa who have worked full-time for the nominating employer in a substantially similar role for at least 2 years within the past 3 years. No separate skills assessment required.
- Direct Entry stream — for workers who do not hold a 482/457 visa. Requires a positive skills assessment, at least 3 years of relevant work experience, and Labour Market Testing by the employer.
This visa grants immediate permanent residence. You can live and work anywhere in Australia.
191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa
The Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) is the permanent residence pathway for holders of the subclass 494 visa who have lived and worked in a designated regional area. Key requirements:
- Hold a subclass 494 visa
- Have lived in a designated regional area for at least 3 years while holding the 494 visa
- Have earned taxable income of at least AUD 70,000 per year for at least 3 years
- Continue to hold competent English
Once granted, this visa allows you to live and work anywhere in Australia as a permanent resident.
407 Training Visa
The Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa that allows you to travel to Australia to undertake occupational training activities to improve your skills. The visa is valid for up to 2 years. There are two streams:
- Occupational training stream — for structured workplace-based training to improve occupational skills in your current occupation.
- Professional development stream — for participation in a professional development program in Australia.
Key requirements: minimum 18 years of age; functional English (IELTS 4.5 or equivalent); approved sponsor; training must be genuine, full-time, and structured. This visa does not allow general paid employment — it is training-focused only. It can serve as a stepping stone toward the 482 and 186 pathway.
